Lahyrnt: Gyrd's supercontinent
Lahyrnt (English pronunciation: la-HEERNT) is Gyrd's only supercontinent, or a land mass that serves as the primary land mass of more than one of Gyrd's continental lithospheric plates, and Lahyrnt is, by far, Gyrd's largest land mass. Lahyrnt is the only land mass on Gyrd that covers portions of all four quadrants of Gyrd's surface.
Lahyrnt covers a massive amount of area, stretching from north of Gyrd's northern polar circle to south of Gyrd's southern polar circle, and Lahyrnt covers all four of the quadrants of Gyrd's surface. At its extreme points, Lahyrnt stretches from approximately 69 degrees north latitude to approximately 69 degrees south latitude, and from approximately 74 degrees east longitude to approximately 74 degrees west longitude; the geographical center of Lahyrnt is within one kilometer of the intersection of Gyrd's equator and Gyrd's prime meridian. Lahyrnt's shape vaguely resembles an hourglass, being narrower at Gyrd's equator than at most lines of latitude north or south of Gyrd's equator; however, a significant majority of Lahyrnt's land area is located in either Gyrd's northwestern quadrant or Gyrd's southeastern quadrant. If one were to draw the smallest possible rectangle containing all of Lahyrnt's area, Lahyrnt would cover approximately five-eighths of said area.
A massive ring of 38 island areas, collectively known as the Outer Islands, surround Lahyrnt, with thousands of islands in total on Lahyrnt's continental shelf. As a result, a massive, but relatively narrow at most points and relatively shallow, marginal sea surrounds Lahyrnt; this is known as the Lahyrntian Sea. All of these island areas forming the Outer Islands are volcanic in nature and, as all of them are are located on a divergent plate boundary completely encircling Lahyrnt, are all geologically similar to real-life Iceland, although many, but not all, of the island areas are located at latitudes that result in vastly different climate patterns than real-life Iceland. When considered a single area, Lahyrnt and the Outer Islands stretch from approximately 71 degrees north latitude to approximately 71 degrees south latitude from north from south, and from approximately 83 degrees east longitude to approximately 83 degrees west longitude from east to west. The geographical center of Lahyrnt and the Outer Islands is within 250 meters of the geographical center of Lahyrnt.
Lahyrnt and the island areas surrounding it are home to significant human, animal, plant, geography, geology, and climate diversity. Lahyrnt is home to billions of people of six different subspecies of humans, as well as of all four major races of people found on Lahyrnt. Lahyrnt and its internal and surrounding waters are home to roughly as many species of animals as, if not more species of animals than, all of real-life Earth. Lahyrnt is home to as many plant species as, if not more plant species than, all of real-life Earth. Lahyrnt is home to virtually every type of land geographic feature that can be found on real-life Earth. All six of the types of geological provinces, as well as virtually every type of mineral, can be found on Lahyrnt. As a supercontinent stretching across both of Gyrd's polar circles and Gyrd's equator, Lahyrnt is home to climate types ranging anywhere from an ice cap climate to a tropical rainforest climate.
Surprisingly for such a massive area, Lahyrnt and all of the islands on its continental shelf are under the jurisdiction of a single unitary state, the Lahyrntian Imperial Democratic Republic. The Imperial Democratic Republic of Lahyrnt's structure of government combines elements of constitutional monarchy, popular sovereignty, representative government, and semi-direct democracy. Thousands of languages are spoken by Lahyrnt's inhabitants, and, while spoken as a primary language by very few Lahyrntians, the Neo-Proto-Lahyrntian language, a complex, polysynthetic, mora-timed, and tonal language that can be thought of as a modern reconstruction of the prehistoric language that many of Lahyrnt's most commonly spoken languages descended from, is Lahyrnt's primary official language.
